Gokyo is a small village located at the elevation of 4,750M/15,580ft in Khumbu Region in the Himalayas of Nepal. This valley is one of the highest settlements in Nepal and in the earth. Gokyo Lake is the highest freshwater lake system with Gokyo lake altitude around 5,357metrs in Sagarmatha Zone in north-eastern Nepal. As sources of fresh water it has high hydrological value. The sparkling and green waters of the Gokyo Lake are most memorable sights of Nepal. Ngozumpa glacier (36 Kilometers) is a longest glacier in the Himalayans originated by a stream coming from the Renjo-la pass (5,340m) from north-west. The Gokyo Lake is considered sacred by Hindu and Buddhist both. Hindus take bath during Janai Purnima festival in the month of August. The belief that birds and wildlife in the region should not be harmed has traditionally protected fauna.
As well as trekking to the six glacial fed Gokyo lakes trekkers can include a climb to the Gokyo Ri (5,400M), which is at the same altitude as Everest base camp. You may do wonderful day hike to Gokyo Ri along with scared lakes. From the top, you will enjoy spectacular views of Everest and other very high mountains Lhotse and Cho-Oyu and glaciers. The Gokyo lake trek is perfect for people who want to trek in the Everest region. The Gokyo lake treks are part of extended Everest base camp trek known as the Everest base camp trek via Gokyo lakes. The Gokyo lake trek difficulty is generally considered moderate for trekkers of this length at high altitude. You won’t be sleeping at this height at any point the trek through and there are fewer nights spend above 4000m than the Everest Base Camp trek.
As the first parts of the trek follow the same route at the Everest Base Camp, the most common way of getting onto the trail is to fly to small airport at Lukla. Trek to Gokyo involves walking through the Sherpa homeland of Namche Bazaar, ethnic villages of Khumung and Machhermo. On an adventurous trekking trails walk through beautiful rhododendron forests, suspension bridges, dragged with Buddhist flags and walking group of yaks. Discover the largest Tengboche monastery and UNESCO World heritage sites. You will be trekking through Sagarmath National Park as with all treks in this park you need a TIMS (Trekkers Information Management System) and Sagarmatha National Park permit. Almost all the buildings are guest house which are for trekkers. The people who live in Village leave during the winter and move to lower parts such as Namche Bazaar. There is a lot of variety of accommodations in this region, from ultra budget to hotels of quality that you could found in Nepal’s cities.
