Upper Mustang Nepal is a remote and isolated region of Himalayas. Generally, Mustang is known for Kingdom of Lo. The Upper Mustang incorporates the northern two-third of Mustang District of Gandaki Pradesh Nepal.  It covers an area of 1,380sq.m and the headquarters is Jomsom. Mustang was pre-historical prohibited kingdom and bordered by the Tibetan plateau including world’s tallest 8000meter peaks Mt. Annapurna and Mt. Dhaulagiri. Upper mustang was restricted demilitarized area until 1992, which makes it most preserved regions in the globe. There are still people who speak traditional Tibetan languages. Nowadays, Upper Mustang is being popular area for trekking and can be visited year around regardless of season. Mustang was an independent kingdom. Mustang is divided into two sub-regions, Lower and Upper mustang. Geographically this cold high altitude steppe is a part of the Tibetan highlands. The entire district is included within the Annapurna Conservation Area which is the largest protected area of Nepal. As per the HDI, Mustang is relatively wealthy district with a good GDP.

It is vast and arid valley formation of rock and barren high altitude deserts. This area receives an average annual rainfall of less than at Jomsom in the Lower Mustang. Kali Gandaki River is a highly important feature of the district. Its main sources lie near the Tibetan border. The main attraction parts of this valley is thousands of Cliff Dwellings and Some highly inaccessible. These Mustang buckles or sky caverns of Nepal are assortment of some synthetic caverns dove into the sides of valley in the Mustang. Where, many archaeologist and researchers have explored this caves and found partially Mummified human bodies. An Ancient decorative art and painting, manuscripts and pottery in the Mustang caves near Lo-Manthang are explored by many explorers. Most tourists travel by foot over largely the same trande route used. Mustang Region is rich in Buddhist culture similar to the Tibet autonomous region. Lo-Manthang is another popular destination for tourists, who want to seek to experience the native culture. You can walk freely without worrying about any weather. You will have spiritual feeling while walking through many Gompas, caves, Chortens, flapping prayer flags, old monasteries and rock painting. While trekking will you have opportunity to catch the glimpse of Tibetan everyday activities and culture of the local areas.

The Upper Mustang trek itinerary leads towards the Hidden Buddhist world. The trek visit Kagbeni, the gate way to Upper Mustang also, the well traveled routes to the Pilgrimage sites of Muktinath. The upper Mustang trek starts after reaching to Pokhara either by domestic flight or roadway transportation. The dominant ethnic group is Thakali. The Thini village, one of the oldest thakali villages in Thak khola region. Upper Mustang Permit is very required special restricted area permit and Annapurna Conservation Area permit.
